September 25, 2020

Date: Thursday 9 July 2020

Lighting Council Australia welcomes the announcement from the Federal Government on June 6, committing $190 million to a new Recycling Modernisation Fund (RMF) that will generate $600 million of recycling investment and drive a billion-dollar transformation of Australia’s waste and recycling capacity.

Lighting Council praises the efforts of the Minister for the Environment, the Hon Sussan Ley MP and Assistant Minister for Waste Reduction and Environmental Management, the Hon Trevor Evans MP. Both Ministers have been strong advocates for improving Australia’s environmental sustainability profile and continue to engage with industry to achieve this. Lighting Council has been particularly active in improving environmental outcomes of the lighting industry through administering the Fluorocycle and Exitcycle Product Stewardship Schemes.

Public Affairs and Environmental Manager Brodie Easton stated, “Fluorocycle and Exitcycle are both industry lead programs that have been effective in increasing the rates of recycling for end-of-life mercury-containing lamps and tubes and emergency and exit lighting batteries respectively. This announcement will further improve the waste and recycling in Australia”.

Mr. Easton added, “Lighting Council Members continue to support the aims of producing environmentally appropriate, quality, low environmental impact lighting products and systems whilst also advocating and facilitating the appropriate disposal of end-of-life lighting and lighting products”.

Lighting Council looks forward to supporting the Government in its latest effort to improve Australia’s environmental outcomes.
